Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney has revealed why Sir Alex Ferguson sold Gerard Pique to Barcelona.

Rooney claimed that Pique was being ‘bullied’ in a match against Bolton in November 2007 and he wasn’t suited for premier league after he mistimed the clearing header of Anelka’s away goal.

The Spanish centre back joined Manchester United from Barcelona’s academy in 2004 and was just 20 when subjected to a physical Bolton side in November 2007.

Barcelona bought Pique for £5million after 23 appearances for United.

“Bolton away more or less finished Gerard Pique’s career at United, ‘He was young and got bullied there and I think that’s when Fergie decided that, physically, he wasn’t right for the Premier League’. Rooney on Sunday Times.

Rooney won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the FWA Footballer of the Year awards for the 2009–10 season, and he won the Premier League Player of the Month award five times throughout his career, a record only bettered by Steven Gerrard and Harry Kane.

Rooney’s displays at the start of the decade saw him come fifth in the vote for the 2011 FIFA Ballon d’Or , and he was named in the FIFA FIFPro World XI for 2011.

He won the Goal of the Season award by the BBC ‘s Match of the Day poll on three occasions, with his bicycle kick against city rivals Manchester City winning the Premier League 20 Seasons Awards Best Goal award.
