Nigeria and Mainz 05 striker Taiwo Awoniyi recounts the injury ordeal he sustained during the weekend’s Bundesliga clash against Augsburg, in which he slumped after a head collision with Augsburg’s defender Felix Uduokhai, that saw him stretched out to the hospital.
Awoniyi was given an instant hand to mouth resuscitation by referee Marco Fritz to resuscitate him. Speaking to OJBSPORT in an exclusive interview, Awoniyi revealed that while he was unconscious, according to the paramedics, he was still begging to continue the game.
“What I find interesting about this incident is that the doctors and paramedics told me that while they were attending to me at the stadium after the collision I was saying I want to continue playing”.
The FIFA U-17 World Cup winner with Nigeria said he was lucky to survive the scare, pointing out that such injury could have been fatal.
The Liverpool loanee narrated he regained his consciousness at the hospital, hours after the unfortunate incident at the Opel arena.
“I am so thankful and grateful to God for being alive. It happened so fast and I didn’t even know what was going on, but in my mind all I was saying was I wanted to continue playing.
I regained consciousness in the hospital and was told of what happened in the stadium. To be alive and okay is the greatest gift that anybody can wish for and I am so appreciative.
I appreciate them for the work they did and I also thank the fans for the well wishes.” He said.
Awoniyi scored his first Bundesliga goal against FC Koln at the resumption of the League in May.
