Liverpool resumes their quest to win a first Premier League title and break the 30-year old curse of not winning the league when they play away to Everton today.

The marker had been laid since the beginning of the season having missed out on the Premier League trophy narrowly last season despite amassing 97 points.

Jurgen Klopp led side showed no mercy on teams in the league. The Reds went on rampage winning 27 matches, drawing 1 and losing 1 before the coronavirus pandemic. With the return of football already and 9 matches left to play, Liverpool will take their first step towards emerging champions later today in the Mersyside derby.

It couldn’t have got any better had Manchester City lost to Arsenal on Wednesday, the Kops would have become champion in their rival’s home if they win but the Toffees will want to avert that.

The derby itself is a rivalry, Carlo Ancelotti side will be looking to inflict a loss on their most hated rival and extend their hope of triumph to a latter date.

Everton’s Brazilian forward, Richarlison stoke fire ahead of tonight’s encounter claiming Virgil Van Dijk is not the best the defender in the world.

The Dutchman has been widely acclaimed to be best in his position after coming second to Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in both the FIFA The Best and Ballon d’Or awards but Richarlison believes Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos, PSG duo of Thiago Silva and Marquinos are all better than him.

“People talk a lot about him, yes he is a great defender but I’ve already dribbled past him. He was chosen as one of the top three in the world as he had an excellent season.

But yes, for me there are better defenders. When pushed on which defenders were better than Van Dijk, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and Sergio Ramos.” Richarlison said.

Everton have a miserable record in recent times in one of the most intensed rivalry game in the world. The last time they defeated Liverpool in all competitions dated back to the year 2010 when goals from Tim Cahill and current Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta secured a two nil victory for them in a league match.

Since then, Everton has lost 11 games and drew 10 to their rivals. Everton are 12th on the log, and they have a chance to qualify for the Europa League if they can win all their remaining matches but with 5 wins, 3 draws and 4 losses since Ancelotti took charge in December, a better and improved performance will be needed, they need to secure points in their last 9 matches to have a hope of qualifying for Europe.

With 22 points ahead of second placed Manchester City, 6 points from glory, Liverpool are on course for a history but the journey kicks off today at the Goodison Park.

It’s the 234th Mersyside derby!
