Chelsea travelled to Villa Park today to take on relegation struglers Aston villa as Chelsea look to solidify there Champions league spot for next season.
Chances were very few in the early stages of the game as both sides struggled to create any clear cut opportunities.Chelsea had most of the ball but could not make it count and Aston Villa on the other hand had opportunities from set pieces but couldn’t hit the target.
Chelsea’s first attempt on target of the afternoon came in the 20th minute when Mason Mount long range strike forced Villa’s goalkeeper into a wonderful save. Chelsea continued to dominate position and had another chance to take the lead on 31st minute when Villa’s goalkeeper almost spills a long range shot from Mateo Kovačič into his own net but was quick enough to get hold of the ball. Aston Villa soon had there own chance in the 33rd minute when Elhgazi forced Arrizabalaga into a good save from a long range shot.
Chelsea’s Mason Mount was probably the best player on the pitch in first half with some neat touches and also creating a lot of scoring opportunities specifically on 39th minute with a dangerous cross inside Villa’s 18 yard box which Loftus-Cheek fails to connect. Aston Villa surprisingly took the lead on the 43rd minute when young defender Kortney Hause find the back of the net after a wonderful cross by Aston Villa into the Chelsea’s box. The first half finished with the home side winning by one goal to nothing (1-0) .
Second half starts and Chelsea continued to dominate the game just like they did in the first half having 90 percent of the ball position to Villa’s 10 percent. Lampard’s men deservenly got their Equalizer on the hour mark from substitute Christian Pulisic who replaced Loftus-Cheek earlier in the second half tapping in a cross from Cesear Azipilecueta. Chelsea took the lead a minute later through striker Oliver Giroud after a sharp turn inside the box by the striker to find the back of the net.
Chances became few after Chelsea scored the second goal but the away side certainly continue to have keep postion of the ball and walk it around the pitch. Aston Villa nearly got an Equalizer on the 87th minute but substitute Jotta was unable to capitalise on a mistake by Chelsea’s defender Christiansen as his strike flew across the post.
The game ended with the away side Chelsea winning by a 2 goals to 1 for the home side. The win moves Chelsea to 51points from 30 games to cement their 4th position in place the table.
