Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola has hinted the fans on what to expect in tonight’s meeting against Chelsea. The Catalan said he’d opt to rest his key players against The Blues tonight, even if he loses the match and losing at Stamford Bridge could hand Liverpool the Premier League title earlier than expected.
Newcastle host City on Sunday night in an FA Cup quarter final clash at the St James’ Park , it’s obvious Pep Guardiola is putting his all in the match, to the extent that he could even set up his team like that of klopp whenever his team has another engagement which makes him use academy players.
“We can’t deny that we have one eye on Newcastle,” he said.
“Chelsea and Liverpool are prestigious but Newcastle is our game. A final. We have one eye.
“It depends on physical condition, the minutes they have played. We take a look a little bit at what is going to happen, not just Chelsea.”
Citizens all time goalscorer Sergio Aguero will surely be a big miss for the Pep side after he got a knock that resulted to a knee injury against Burnley on Monday night.
The former Athletico Madrid striker had a successful surgery in Barcelona yesterday on a lateral meniscus injury in his left knee, and is set for up to seven weeks on the sidelines which is ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
Brazilian youngster Gabriel Jesus is next in line to stand in for Kun Aguero pending the time being but the City gaffer has admitted that German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan could play as a top nine whenever he opts to rotate his team in the coming weeks.
If IIkay Gundogan plays up front, he’d not be the first player im the City set up under the Pep to to play the ‘false nine’ role. Players like Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne have also played in that ‘false nine’ role in the past but Guardiola believes Gundogan could offer a different alternative.
“We don’t have any doubts about Gabriel,’ Guardiola said. ‘The only doubt we have is that not one single player can play every three days.
Raheem can play in this position, even Gundogan and Bernardo. Not like a (proper) striker but we can use them.”
Runaway league leaders Liverpool are 23 points clear of the premier league defending Champions and they can earn a maximum of 87 points if they win all their remaining eight games.
Liverpool need Chelsea to hold their ground against Manchester City so at least a draw, because a draw is enough to hand Liverpool the trophy since they’ve won their last match against the Eagles (Crystal Palace).
