Anthony Martial became the first Manchester United player to score a Premier League hat-trick in seven years.
The Frenchman scored all goals in three-nil win over Sheffield United at Old Trafford yesterday in the league game. It was also his first professional career hattrick and his first for the 1999 treble winners as United continues their fight for a place in the 2020/2021 Champions League season.
It is so shocking that the Red Devils went seven years to get a hattrick in the league though Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have netted hat-tricks in Europe since United’s last in the Premier League.
The last player to score a treble in the league was Van Persie in the 2012/2013 season which coincidentally was the last time won the premier league title. It also cumulated as Sir Alex Ferguson last season in charge of the Carrington based club.
Known to be a team that has featured fearsome attackers in their ranks. the likes of Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, etc, all who excelled efficiently under Sir Alex, one would wonder how United could have gone seven years without a hattrick in a league they have won the most titles.
In the premier league, the Red Devils have a total of 33 hattricks with 32 of them coming under their legendary manager. Prior to Martial’s hattrick yesterday, United has scored 407 goals in the league with none of their player taking home the match ball starting from the 2013/2014 season.
During the same period, Manchester City scored 16 hattricks with Sergio Aguero accounting for 11, Tottenham Hotspur had nine, Harry helping himself to eight. Chelsea also scored eight, Arsenal has managed five, Everton scored five, Liverpool, also on four.
The post-Ferguson era has seen United struggle so much despite spending so much on players. £840m on new players with almost £300m on attackers. the likes of Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez have all dorn the colours of the 20-time league champion a league all failing to score a hat-trick before Martial broke the curse.
Has the devil decided to release his attackers to start painting the league red with goals?
Time will tell!
