Atletico Madrid beat Alaves 2-1 at home to maintain their superb run of form since the season resumed, they recoded their fourth consecutive win to further tighten their hold on the third place position.

Spanish midfielder Niguez Saul broke the deadlock by heading home a pin-point free kick from Kieran Trippier in the 59th minute,
while Diego Costa sent goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco the wrong way from the penalty spot to double their lead in the 73rd minutes.

Saul who was linked to a £71m move to Manchester united, fuelled suggestions that he could be heading to Old Trafford this summer when he said last weekend that he would soon be revealing his “new club”, and according to reports in Spain, the midfielder is set to join the Red Devils this summer.

Saul, who has also been linked with Barcelona has scored five times in 41 appearances during the 2019-20 campaign, including a goal against Liverpool in the last-16 stage of the Champions League.

Athletico Madrid had to endure an uncomfortable end to the match as Alaves forward Joselu scored a penalty in added time. Atletico are now four points clear of Sevilla in fourth place and have opened up a superb nine-point cushion over Getafe in the fifth position.

Alaves, who who suffered their third defeat in a row , are 15th on 35 points, nine above the relegation zone.
