The race for the Premier League title might have been ran and won by Liverpool but there are still more races being run without any clear winner yet. The race for the 4th spot, Europa league spot and of course the race to the golden boot.
With just 6 more games to play, the race to the golden boot is getting hotter. Vardy has finally gotten company on 19 goals after he fired blanks against Everton and Aubamenyang banged a brace as Arsenal ran riot against hapless Norwich City.
Southampton’s Danny Ings is breathing heavily down the duo’s necks as he is currently on 18 goals.
A quick rundown of the chances of each of them as they race towards the finishing line.
Who wins the 2019/2020 golden boot.
The English striker had been on fire prior to the Covid19 interregnum, scoring 19 Premier league goals but since “Project Restart” started, the Leicester man has fired blanks on 3 matches, 2 EPL games and in their Emirates FA Cup ouster to Chelsea. Prior to the restart, he was all alone at the summit of the scorers’ chart but now has company after Arsenal’s Gabonese striker bagged a brace against the Canaries yesterday.
Leceister City’s blip in form has coincided with their star striker’s as they are struggling to hold on to their 3rd spot. Currently, they are just a point ahead of Chelsea in 4th, 3 points ahead of Manchester United and Wolves in 5th and 6th respectively and 9 points ahead of 7th placed Arsenal. If the Foxes are to finish in top 4 this season, they need their top marksman to shoot and shoot accurately again .
Pierre Emeric Aubamenyang
He finished last season sharing the golden boot with Liverpool’s stars; Salah and Mane. Definitely, he would want to go a step better by winning it outrightly. He did that bid a world of good after bagging a brace against Norwich yesterday. His ambitions seems in tandem with Arsenal’s. The Gunners are trying to force their way into top 4 and Europe at the very least and they would need their top scorer firing on all cylinders. A brace yesterday would have lent his confidence a huge boost going into the final run of games.
The Southampton striker has been a rather green horn in the race for this season’s top scorer gong. Left Liverpool for modest and struggling Southampton, yet raking up as many as 18 goals. Definitely, a remarkable achievement. The Saints have their sights on survival and they have their striker to look to for goals. Would he deliver them, time would tell?
Yet again, the Egyptian is in the race for the Premier League golden boot for the third season running. In his first season, he won it outrightly and last season, he had to share it with his teammate, Sadio Mane and Arsenal’s Aubamenyang. This season he is a bit lagging behind on just 17 goals. With Liverpool sealing their first EPL title in 30 yrs, his focus would now be on his own personal ambition which is to win the golden boot but how easy would that be? He has ground to cover but also has time to do it, 7 matches.
The Argentine has been ever present in the race for the golden shoe, he might not win it but would definitely race for it. Having scored just 16 goals, he is definitely in the race for it but having sustained a knee injury, it stands to be seen how many more games out of the 7 left that he would be able to play. With City still very much involved in the Uefa Champions League and Premier League already gone, Guardiola might decide to wrap his top marksman in wool and unleash him once the Champions League restarts. Then, he might just be like a new signing.
The race for the golden shoe is definitely shaping up to be one that would go all the way to the wire. Take a sit, grab some popcorn and watch as events unfold.
