Real Madrid extended their lead over Barcelona with a 79th minute converted penalty by Sergio Ramos against Getafe.

Getafe played with impressive intensity in the opening minutes, registering four attempts on target to Madrid’s one, and coming closest as Xabi Etxeita hit a shot with his thigh which Thibaut Courtois did well to push wide.

Madrid were far from their best in a frantic derby at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium on Thursday, but captain Ramos secured a precious victory 11 minutes from full time after Mathias Olivera was adjudged to have upended Dani Carvajal.

Getafe were unfortunate to take home at least a point after a decent performance.

Real Madrid go four points clear of Barcelona on La Liga table

Eder Militao replaced Raphael Varane who took a blow in the head during the first half that ended goalless.

With Real Madrid now Four points clear with five games to go, they are now within touching distance of the Spanish Laliga title, taking advantage of Barcelona’s back-to-back draws against Celta Vigo and Atletico Madrid to take a firm grip of the race at the top of the table. Was tonight the night Real Madrid effectively started tying the white ribbons on the trophy? It’s going to take a collapse from here on for them not to end the season as champions of the Spanish laliga.

Real Madrid will look to take another step towards clinching the Laliga title when they travel to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, while Getafe will travel to play Osasuna.
