European Championship and Commonwealth games Gold medal winner Bianca Williams, has accused the Met police of racial profiling.
The British sprinter and her partner Ricardo Dos Santos who is also a sprinter were stopped on Saturday by the police in London. The police claimed the car was going on the wrong side of the road and did not stop when asked to stop.
A police statement said: “Officers from the Directorate of Professional Standards have reviewed both footage from social media, and the body-worn video of the officers, and are satisfied that there is no concern around the officers’ conduct.” As seen on BBC.
The two athletes were dragged out of the car and handcuffed, despite the fact that their three-month-old son was in the car during the search. The search lasted 45 minutes, after which Dos Santos and Williams were released.
Speaking to a radio station Bianca said she has been left really shaken by the incident.
“It’s always the same with Ricardo,” she said tearfully to the microphones. They think he is driving a stolen car or has smoked cannabis. It is a racial filing. The way they spoke to him was shocking.”
The couple’s car is a Mercedes and Dos Santos says that since he bought it in 2017, they have stopped it at least 15 times, while it had never happened to him with the previous subcompact.
Bianca and Ricardo have decided to file a formal complaint after the incident.
