Bright Edomwonyi discussed his career, his challenges and hurdles crossed to attain the success he’s achieved. His words were noted by Ojbsport in an exclusive interview.
In his words, life is in pages, you never can tell what the next page could come with. Bright plays for Austria Wien. A striker by trade, with the nickname “Berbatov”. His journey wasn’t as rosy as some might presume.
Bright Edomwonyi was born on the 24th of July, 1994 in the city of Benin, Nigeria. A city that has produced some notable Nigerian football stars like Julius Aghahowa ,Yakubu Ayegbeni, Osaze Odewinge etc.
The strikers’ sport-loving father was an early motivating figure that pushed his dream further,
“…My dad was a big fan of football and he didn’t even know football would become such a big sport, he was the person that really supported me and those that knew me in Ikorodu, can also testify to it”
Bright’s progress was almost halted when his father relocated to Benin, southern part of Nigeria, and the family had to move with him. But when his elder brother moved back to lagos, he followed suit to join his brother in Lagos. Where he continued his pursuit for his dream.
In Lagos, as he revealed; some days were good and some weren’t as delightful. Survival was challenging without their parents and a steady source of income, as his brother played grass roots football too. But for them to survive, his brother forfeited his dream to do menial jobs to support the dream of his younger brother.
“My brother is a big inspiration to me, he supported me and told me to believe in myself.“
His admission to a football academy sped his progress. Bright still relish his days at Dosu football Academy. He spent 3 months at the Academy before getting a chance to travel to Waterloo, Belgium at age 16. As a teenager, it was difficult to settle in. But with the help of established Nigerian players like Emmanuel Sarko and Moses Adams, his adaptation was quick.
“People like Moses Adams and Emmanuel Sarko helped me settled down fast in Belgium. We go to training together and I sometimes end up spending the whole day with them.“
As he progressed, the striker’s talent shone. It was not long for big clubs to come calling for his service. Ajax football club wanted his service, but he went with Gent FC for personal reasons.
Bright, currently plays for Austria Wien in Austria and according to the 25-year-old striker, he’s happy with his achievements so far.
“I am very happy for how far I have come, it wasn’t a smooth journey at all, I count myself as one of the lucky ones. Not because I am special but because God picked me” He concluded.
