Arsenal’s head coach Mikel Arteta has addressed the club on the need for investments in this summer. Or get ready to be left behind.
Mikel Arteta spoke extensively to the media in his pre match conference ahead of Liverpool’s visit to the Emirates for the Premier league week 36 encounter on Wednesday. The North London club is facing a battle of not qualifying for any European football competition for the first time in over 25 years. Arsenal must get all the three points against Jurgen Klopp’s men who are already the league champions, to give them any chance of getting into any European competition next season.
The Gunners are currently sitting in the Ninth position on the Premier league table with 50points from 35 games, Nine points below Leicester who occupies the final Champions league spot on the table and Four points behind Sheffield United who currently occupy the final Europa league spot in Seventh place.
The club’s head coach was quizzed on certain situation at the club on Tuesday by the press which includes his plan for the summer, the need to sign a world class defender, and also on if the club would still be able to attract world class players without European football.
The former Arsenal captain took time to answer questions been thrown at him in his pre match conference and this is what he has to say:
On the need for investment: “You are not in the Champions League and because you are not in the Champions League, you say, ‘Okay, I don’t invest because I don’t have the financial ability to do it’. But the other clubs invest and then the gap becomes bigger and we keep moving backwards”
On the club attracting top players without European football “Because we’ve an incredible history, an incredible structure, in a beautiful city and a style of play that attracts players. I’m telling you now because when I am closer to the market now when I speak to people, a lot of players want to play for Arsenal.”
On the need to sign a world class defender like Van Dijk: “Yes as thats the way I believe a team has to be built. They were conceding goals, with individual errors & set pieces as well. The moment they touched the spine of the team that changes dramatically. It’s quick fix.”
Arteta also made mention of the fact that the club would need to move certain players who are surplus to requirements in other to raise funds and free up wage bills to sign new players. There have been rumours around the media that players like Sokratis, Maitland-Niles, Matteo Guendouzi, Mustafi, Saed Kolasinac etc would be shown the exit door this summer.
