Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has revealed he became a goalkeeper by mistake.
In an interview on the sports program tagged GAME ON on Nigeria Info 99.3FM Lagos, Maduka discloses the journey of his football career so far.
Nurturing football stars requires proper development. For Maduka, his journey with German teams was a good development for his career.
“I have been through the youth teams in Germany, the likes of Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Monchengladbach and I started with Fortuna Dusseldorf as a professional. They are good at development.
“There has been a good development. It was a good, good step for me.”
The newly signed Sparta Rotterdam player never thought of being a goalie. According to him, it happened unexpectedly.
“To be honest, it came by mistake, I started as a striker when I was young. I use to strike. Our Goalkeeper was called in winter, I was the first guy who said let me try and since then I have never been out of sticks.”
Every player dreams of playing regularly as it makes them better. The former Fortuna Dusseldorf safe hands say it was a worthy exposure sitting on the bench during Bundesliga games for Fortuna Dusseldorf.
“It’s important for players, especially for young players to have a lot of playing times. You get better with every game.
“For me it was good. When I miss some games with the second team of Fortuna Dusseldorf, I was up with the first team, I was on the bench in the Bundesliga and that was good enough for my own experience to get this high-level football.
“It was a good mix of playing with the second team and seating on the bench in the Bundesliga.“
The Eredivise has been tagged as a league that breeds young stars. The Dutch league gives the right football education that has shot many young prodigies into world-class superstars.
Okoye wants to follow the trend hence he chooses the Eredivise.
“Fortuna wanted to loan me to the Netherlands but I and my advisers was like why send me on-loan when there is a direct move that will be better for myself. So we settle for a direct move to Sparta Rotterdam.
“The Dutch league is good for young players, we see a lot of young players, young talents there. I can prove myself in this league.
“I thought I will get my chance there. I will take it, I will work very hard to get these chances. It is a good move. It’s a fancy football. A lot of work for me. I can go to the stardom from a starter.
“It will be a good goalkeeping team with experience goalkeepers. Me as a young goalkeeper, I can learn from them. Yes, I am hungry, I can’t wait to see me and other goalkeepers, to compete with them. I think it will be a good time. A lot of fun but a lot of hard work and a lot of fight.“
Born in Dusseldorf to a Nigerian Father and a German Mother, the one cap Super Eagles goalie loves plantain so much. His favorite team is Liverpool and he dreams of playing in the Premier League one day.
