Argentina and Barcelona captain Lionel Messi registered his 21st assist of the La Liga in the 2019-20 campaign, surpassing the extraordinary tally set by Xavi Hernández just over a decade ago for Barcelona.
The league is lost, but that does not stop Lionel messi from setting another laliga record.
Barcelona legend Xavi has held the record since the 2008-09 campaign as the former Barcelona midfielder registered 20 assists that season.
Lionel Messi equalled the tally by setting up Arturo Vidal’s goal in Barca’s 1-0 win over Real Valladolid last week.
The Argentine broke Xavi’s total assist in a season in Barcelona’s final game of their La Liga campaign against Alaves as he provided the pass for Ansu Fati’s opening goal in their 5-0 thumping of Alaves.
Lionel Messi then went on to score his 24th and 25th goal of the laliga season with semedo and Luis Suarez scoring the other two.
That 25th goal of the season should be enough to wrap up the Pichichi prize for the competition’s top scorer, with Karim Benzema (on 21 goals) in action for Real Madrid at Leganes later on Sunday
Messi has now been involved in 1000 goals in his career (703 goals, 297 assists), having played only 867 games.
Barcelona LA Masia graduate Riqui puig also recorded two assist in a convincing performance that also saw him struck the post earlier in the game.
Barcelona finished the season on 82 points, in second place, with Alaves just clear of the drop zone in 16th.
