David Beckham’s Inter Miami stumbled to a 1-0 defeat to New York City FC thereby confirming them as the first side to be eliminated from Major League Soccer‘s restart competition.
Libya international, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi 64th min goal was the difference in the game.
Inter Miami have now lost all five matches they’ve played in official competition in their inaugural season, all of which came by a one goal defeat.
“Sometimes the road is long and you need to take a breather. Manchester United, Real Madrid, La Liga and the premiership wasn’t built in a day,” part-owner Beckham said after Monday’s latest defeat.
Both teams, winless in the tournament going in, needed a victory to maintain hopes of qualifying for the single-elimination stage of the tournament. In fact, each team came in 0-4 on the season — the first such matchup in Major League Soccer history.
Inter Miami Head Coach Diego Alonso said he’s strongly behind the team “We are going to continue insisting, fighting hard. I don’t regret being the head coach of this team.
I am with them more than ever. We’re going to get through this together, believing in them and improving together. We know that football is going to give us what we deserve.” He concluded.
When might Inter Miami play again? That’s not clear. Sixteen MLS teams will advance to a single-elimination playoff, with the final scheduled for Aug 11. The league body is yet to announce a schedule for the continuation of the regular season, and some of that could be contingent upon the state of the country and the spread of COVID-19
