Former Nigeria’s Super Eagles midfielder and captain John Mikel Obi is set to join England championship side Stoke city on a year deal, OJB Sport reports.

He has been a free agent since leaving Trabzonspor in March, having played alongside Nigerial international Anthony Nwakaeme as they closed in on their first Turkish league title since the mid-1980s. Without him in re-start, they finished second.

Before moving to Turkey, former Chelsea star player has represented Middlebrough also in the championship and refused to extend his stay at the Riverside stadium.

Head coach of the Potters Michael O’Neill is filling the spine of his team with experience, having already brought back James Chester on a permanent basis following a loan from Aston Villa; and yesterday signing free agent striker Steven Fletcher.

Mikel started his professional playing career with Plateau United of Jos before moving to Lyn Oslo of Norway and later joining the Stamford bridge club.

Mikel came to the fore in English football during his time with Chelsea, with whom he won the Champions League, Europa League, two Premier League titles and three FA Cups during an 11-year stay.

He has also had a spell in China with Tianjin TEDA.

If the move materialised, Mikel will be joining another Nigeria’s Super Eagles midfielder Etebo Oghenekaro who is still with the Potters but spent last season on loan in the Spanish La Liga with Getafe.
