More than seventeen years ago he signed his first professional contract and not much later, on July 30, 2003, in the Champions League preliminary round against Rapid Bucharest, he celebrated his debut at the age of just seventeen.
Kompany who has been nursing injury announced is departure from the game on Monday morning after the team training session.
“It was the moment for me. I think we were all a little surprised by the timing, but we all knew it was the goal, ”Kompany said in a video message. “And now I can no longer get hurt.”
“The number 4 is done”, Kompany refers to his number. “New step, new chapter.
It was the moment for me. I think we’re all a little surprised by the timing, but we all knew that was the goal.
I think the most important thing, for the team, for the players, for everyone, is that things are clear.
And for myself, I quickly came to the conclusion that I had to stop.
I had to take the plunge. For me, the Anderlecht project is more important than the individual Kompany.
I am all in with everything I have in the project. And I am hungry and ready.
I’m going all out to get them as high as where they need to be as quickly as possible. ”
“My emotion is an emotion that is completely focused on the future. A sense of ambition, of wanting to do good, of making dreams. Don’t be sorry.
The will to want to do better than Anderlecht that is just ‘good’. ”
“In my head it is also a liberation now. I have no regrets, nothing. Just ambition and enthusiasm. I actually flipped a switch because I know I need to be clear.
It has to be in the interest of the group, of the players. And I think this is where I will contribute the most.
Be there every week, for better and for worse. Winning with beautiful football.
Being able to transform talent into quality. Getting the best out of every workout every day.
I have so much energy. And now I can’t get hurt anymore ”, laughs Kompany.
Vincent Kompany stops playing football and becomes Anderlecht’s trainer: “This is a liberation for me”
“I can say one thing: I listened carefully, I watched carefully. And I think Frankie Vercauteren has supported me in every way possible.
He’s someone I’ve been able to count on. He guided me as a young player and now as a young coach.
We have so much respect for each other. In the end I have now come to a point where I can only be grateful. ”
Kompany played an active in City’s growth into an absolute top club and became captain and club icon.
In eleven seasons, he won everything there was to win except the Champions League and, despite his susceptibility to injury, became one of the most respected center-backs in the Premier League and by extension the rest of the world.
Next Sunday, Kompany will make his debut as head coach in the home game against Mouscron.
