Ramón Planes is the new technical director of FC Barcelona. He is the successor of Eric Abidal, who was fired yesterday after two and a half years.

Ramón Planes – 52-year-old Catalan, who has been working as a technical director in Spanish football since 1999 and thus brings a wealth of experience.

For the past twenty years he has worked at L’Hospitalet, Racing Santander, Deportivo Alavés, UE Lleida, RCD Espanyol, Elche, Rayo Vallecano and Getafe.

In the 2014/2015 season, he was part of the technical secretariat of Tottenham Hotspur, his only job outside Spain.

Abidal was already kicked out yesterday by FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, who had already fired coach Quique Setién the day before after a contract of 218 days.

A big clean-up at FC Barcelona was inevitable after last Friday’s 2-8 defeat to Bayern Munich.

Abidal worked at Barcelona for two and a half years, but has been at odds with his former teammate and star player Lionel Messi in recent months.

The forty-year-old Frenchman was appointed technical director at FC Barcelona in June 2018 as successor to Robert Fernández.

Planes is married to former gymnast Bito Fuster, who became world champion in 1991 and won two European titles.
