Belgium and Inter Milan of Italy striker Romelu Lukaku has expressed his sincere appreciation to the Inter Milan fans through out the season, OJB Sport reports.
The former Manchester United forward who has been a hero for Nerrazzuri this season turned a villain on Friday after he netted an own goal that gave Spanish club Sevilla a 3-2 win in the final of UEFA Europa League.
Lukaku could have become the hero of Internazionale on Friday evening, but his missed opportunity in the 65th minute cost the club from Milan dearly.
Ten minutes later, the 27-year-old striker unhappily worked the ball into his own goal after a bicycle kick from Diego Carlos, which gave Sevilla a 3-2 win in the Europa League final.
The final in Cologne started so well for Lukaku, after he was knocked down by Diego Carlos and opened the score on behalf of Inter from eleven meters.
He thus came to 34 goals in 51 matches in his debut season for the club from Milan, which had not won a prize since the Coppa Italia in 2011.
That had to change in Cologne, but Sevilla eventually won the Europa League for the sixth time in fourteen years due to the unfortunate moment of Lukaku in the 75th minute.
The Belgian striker was completely broken afterwards and that also hurt the fans of Inter.
While Lukaku had a difficult relationship in England with the fans of Everton and Manchester United, he has been hugely loved in Milan all season.
Under the hashtag #WeLoveYouRom, thousands of Inter fans have said in recent days that Lukaku needn’t worry.
They still loved and thanked him for all his goals in his first season.
“We haven’t had such a leader in our team since Javier Zanetti, if you continue like this you will be our new captain”, was one of the comments.
