Rising RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano has been handed his first call-up to the French national team.

The 21-year-old defender had already represented his country at youth level, he will now have a chance to earn his first senior cap when France face Sweden and Croatia in the UEFA Nations League next month.

Apart from Upamecano, Houssem Aouar is also having his first call-up to the French National team, with Anthony Martial returning to the France team for the first time since March 2018.

Upamecano spoke about his call up
“It is a huge honor for me. As a boy I dreamed of wearing the blue kit of France – I’m very proud and will continue to work hard. I’m looking forward to facing Emil [Forsberg] in the first game.”

Upamecano was so impressive for RB Leipzig in the 2019/2020 Bundesliga season, with his contract due to expire in 2021 Leipzig had to extend his stay in the club to fend off clubs interested in signing the defender.

Upamecano played a huge role for Leipzig been Champions League semi finalist, he had a stellar performance against Athletico Madrid in the quarter final which caught the eyes of clubs around Europe.

Upamecano has played 113 games for RB Leipzig with three goals and two assists to his name.

Upamecano will be looking to impress the French coach Didier Deschamps, as he hopes for a chance to play when France play against Sweden September 5 and then Croatia September 8.
