American tennis legend Serena Williams has won her first match at the US Open. She defeated compatriot Kristie Ahn in two sets: 7-5 6-3.
The 23-time grand slam champion started the game with difficulty, but eventually turned the game to her will. At the Arthur Ashe stadium in New York, it took Williams an hour and 21 minutes to put Ahn aside.
In the second round, Williams meets the Russian Margarita Gasparjan. She won in three sets against the Puerto Rican Monica Puig: 6-3 6-7 6-0.
The 38-year-old had not had a very good preparation for her hunt for a seventh title at the US Open. Last week, she made a tired and sometimes frustrated impression during the Cincinnati tournament, which was also played on Flushing Meadows due to the corona virus. She was eliminated in the third round.
Serena’s sister Venus has been eliminated in the first round of the US Open by Karolína Muchová. The Czech was too strong in two sets: 6-3 7-5. In the next round she will face Anna Kalinskaya from Russia.
