Every year the US Open serves as the 4th and final Grand Slam of the year in the tennis calendar, but due to the COVID-19, it became the 2nd Grand Slam of the year.
A lot of critics and players have come out to criticize the tournament organisers United State Tennis Association (USTA) for sticking to their decisions of hosting the tournament, the USTA stood firm and the tournament is been played despite some top players withdrawing due to them not being comfortable yet because of the pandemic.
To make the players more comfortable, the Cincinnati Open which serves as a tune-up for the tournament was played on the USTA grounds.
On Monday 31st of August 2020, the event started and we had a lot of mouth-watering clashes alongside a lot of upsets. The most eye-catching one was on the women side as no one-seeded Karolina Pliskova lost in the 2nd round to Caroline Garcia 6-1, 7-6 while on the other hand, former Next-Gen champion and title hopeful Stefanos Tsitisipas squandered 6 match points and lost in the 3rd round to Borna Coric 6-7, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5,7-6.
There have also been controversies 17th seed Benoit Paire pulled out after testing positive for coronavirus while Kristina Mladenovic was forced to withdraw due to isolation rules.
128 players started from both sides but now we are left with 16 players from each side.
The Round of 16 kicks off officially today with the top half of both the ATP and WTA contesting for a place in the last eight while the bottom half plays tomorrow.
