If you are talking about a midfielder that has the ability to control the midfield and set his own orchestra to play, Thiago comes to mind. Alcantara is one of the finest of his generation, with his ability to orchestrate play from deep with his quick turns and mazy dribbles, second to none.
The Spanish midfielder showed why he is one of the best around when he marshaled the Bayern midfield in their UEFA Champions League final conquest of French giants, PSG. The Catalan cum Bavarian looks set to leave the Allianz Arena after helping the German giants to a clean sweep of all trophies.
Who wants to lose a great player, definitely not Bayern as he was offered a new deal which he rejected, insisting on pursuing new adventures away from Munich and Gernany. At 29, with just one more big contract to sign, he wants a move to the Premier League. While Bayern would loathe to lose a player of Thiago’s quality, they would be kicking themselves at the prospect of him walking away like Bossman, for free. To this end, they need to cash in now or have him go for free next summer starting with see side talks with foreign admirers as early as the winter.
For some players, trophies and money alone do not bring fulfillment, some want to see the world, try new things and culture. That is the stage Thiago is now, he is not leaving Bayern in search of trophies, he has won them aplenty at the Allianz Arena; Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, Champions League, German Super Cup, he wants a new adventure and the Premier League is the attraction. Reports have linked him with a move to Liverpool while that is not a surprise as the Reds are major juggernauts in the Premier League.
The issue is not absence interest but purely financial calculation. Liverpool hierarchy can smell blood so they want the kill. They know in a year, Alcantara will be a free agent so why splash out much cash now to sign someone they can get for free in no distant time? For Bayern, it is a case of why allow to go for free when they can cash in now?
While Liverpool are still digging in their heels, they could be blown out of the water by another ambitious team who are willing to pay Bayern the money they want and also give Alcantara the new adventure he craves. Klopp loves the magic of Alcantara but unwilling to tinker with the midfield solidity of Henderson and Wijnaldum, something that is bound to happen should Alcantara join. Hence, the reluctance.
With Alcantara rejecting Bayern’s recent offer of a new deal, there seems to be no way back, he wants to leave but would it be for Liverpool? Recent reports have it that Arsenal are also interested in the former La Masia prodigy. That is not surprising since the Gunners have lacked a real creative outlet since freezing German, Mesut Ozil out of the squad. Thiago will bring back that coordination and creative mojo to the team. It is no doubt that Arsenal are in the market for a creative midfielder and have been linked with a move for Lyon star, Aouor.
Lyon do not sell cheap and have already slapped a 60 million Euros tag on him. It is clear that Alcantara represents a cheaper and more experienced option, little wonder reports have it that Arteta has been doing a wenger around him, trying to convince him to move to North London instead of Merseyside. It worked for Willian and Gabriel, it might just work for Thiago.
It seems a dilemma of some sort for Thiago as he has to choose between the club bidding its time to sign him on a free and one that is ready to splash out the cash to get him right now. Perhaps Liverpool do not rate him as much to be unwilling to put their money where their mouth is.
Liverpool is an attractive proposition but Arteta is building an interesting project and winning two titles back to back against all odds might just be a precursor to a new era of success at Emirates, Alcantra might just want to be a part of it.
