Spanish tennis player Pablo Carreño Busta has reached the semi-finals of the US Open.
The number 20 on the placement list defeated twelfth-placed Canadian Denis Shapovalov in a long five-setter: 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), 0-6, 6-4.
The 29-year-old Spaniard was given a ‘free passage’ to the quarter-finals in New York after his opponent Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the first set of the match in the previous round for misconduct on the track.
The Serb out of sheer frustration hit a linesman on the neck with a wild blow after he had handed in his service.
Carreño Busta’s long match against Shapovalov ended in a decisive fifth set, after the Spaniard had given up the fourth set after a break behind.
After more than four hours of play, Carreño Busta got his first match point and immediately struck.
He now competes in the semi-finals against the fifth-placed German Alexander Zverev.
