We started with 128 players on both sides and we are down to the last 4. On the male side, a new Grand Slam champion will be crowned this weekend.

Whoever it is will be the only active men’s major winner under the age of 30.

One semi-final contains two former Grand Slam finalists in the form of Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev.

The other boasts two players who have been to a semi-final but have never been to the final Alexander Zverev and Pablo Carreno Busta.

Pablo Carreno Busta vs Alexander Zverev
Zverev’s arrival at the semi-finals was not a surprise but Carreno Busta’s appearance in the final is a big suprised to us.

Carreno Busta played top seed Novak Djokovic who was the favorite to win this year in the Round of 1 but the world number 1 was disqualified for hitting the ball at a line judge which paved the way for Carreno Busta to return to another Grand Slam semifinal.

He has come through two five-setters, most recently against 12th seed Denis Shapovalov and will likely have to dig deep against Zverev – who is the heavy favourite to reach the final.

Alexander Zverev route to US Open semi-finals
R1: 7-6 5-7 6-3 7-5 win over Kevin Anderson
R2: 7-5 6-7 6-3 6-1 win over Brandon Nakashima
R3: 6-7 6-4 6-2 6-2 win over Adrian Mannarino
R4: 6-2 6-2 6-1 Davidovich Fokina
QF: 1-6 7-6 7-6 6-3 win over Borna Coric

Pablo Carreno Busta route to US Open semi-finals

R1: 4-6 6-3 1-6 6-3 6-3 win over Yasutaka Uchiyama.
R2: 6-1 6-2 6-2 win over Mitchel Krueger
R3: 6-4 6-3 6-2 win over Ricardas Berankis
R4: 6-5 DQ over Novak Djokovic
QF: 3-6 7-6 7-6 0-6 6-3 win over Dennis Shapovalov

Still there are flaws in the German games. He looked vulnerable as he fell a set-and-a-break down to Borna Coric in the quarter-finals but he knows this is his best chance to reach a first Grand Slam final.

Prediction: Zverev to win in four sets.

Daniil Medvedev vs Dominic Thiem

For most people, this the match of the tournament.
A perfect compliment of styles. Thiem, the heavy hitting Austrian. Medvedev, the fascinating Russian.

Both have been a class better than the rest of the draw with Djokovic out of the equation, this should have been the final but it was impossible with them landing in the same half of the draw but a semi-final encounter will have to be accepted.

Daniil Medvedev route to US Open semi-finals

R1: 6-1 6-2 6-4 win over Federico Delbonis
R2: 6-3 6-2 6-4 win over Christopher O’Connell
R3: 6-3 6-3 6-2 win over Jeffery John Wolf
R4: 6-4 6-1 6-0 win over Francis Tiafoe
QF: 7-6 6-3 7-6 win over Andrey Rublev

Dominic Thiem route to the US Open semi-finals

R1: 7-6 6-3 RET over Jaume Munar
R2: 6-3 6-3 6-2 win over Sumit Nagal
R3: 6-2 6-2 3-6 6-3 win over Marin Cilic
R4: 7-6 6-1 6-1 win over Felix Auger-Aliassime
QF: 6-1 6-2 6-4 win Alex De Minaur

Both have reached the final of Grand Slams. Medvedev was beaten in the final in New York last year, Thiem has two French Open finals and one Australian Open final to boast of.

Thiem leads their head-to-head 2-1 but Medvedev won their most recent meeting, which was on an outdoor hard court. They have never met in a best-of-five sets match.

Both of them will know this is a glorious opportunity to win a first major because they are playing well enough to win this title.

Prediction: This is a tough one but going with Dominic Thiem to win in five sets.
