Gernot Rohr since his appointment as the Super Eagles head coach in 2016 has struck with the trio of Francis Uzoho, Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi as his goalkeepers.
At the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Uzoho was the main man as he featured in all three games played before the Eagles crashed out.
During the 2019 AFCON Daniel Akpeyi played majority of the games but Ikechukwu Ezenwa got to play against Madagascar where we lost 2-0 and Francis Uzoho manned the goalpost in the 1-0 win over Tunisia.
There have been concerns over the goalkeepers Rohr has paraded in the last four years but not it seems like there’s no longer a cause for alarm.
Daniel Akpeyi who’s based in South Africa has always received sticks for his below par performance whenever he plays for Nigeria, and many shown their displeasure whenever they see him in the team.
German born Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye got an invite to the national team last year and he made his debut against Brazil coming off the bench for the injured Francis Uzoho.
Gernot Rohr called up three goalkeepers for the October friendlies against Algeria and Tunisia, Uzoho and Akpeyi missed out through injuries and Ezenwa didn’t make the cut due to lack of professional football.
Seeing that the regular three aren’t available, Okoye who recently joined the team topped the list with former Nigeria youth internationals Matthew Yakubu and Dele Alampasu being the back ups.
In the two friendly games Maduka was brilliant, exhibiting confidence and quality.
Rohr has never hidden his intentions to bring in more players into the Eagles fold and recently Tobias Lawal also joined the team, Rohr rates him highly.
With the emergence of Maduka Okoye and the introduction of former Austrian youtn international Tobias Lawal, one could say that the days of Daniel Akpeyi and Ikechukwu Ezenwa are numbered.
