Chelsea are really in a bullish mood with their fans upbeat about the possibilities this season. After a seeming indifferent start to the season, the Blues have gained momentum, keeping clean sheets and scoring for fun. A form that has seen them oscillate between the top 4 and the 5th position they currently occupy. This is definitely good vibes for Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard who faces a make or mar season after finishing his maiden season as Blues’ boss without a trophy despite getting to the final of the Emirates FA Cup.

Losing talismanic attacker Eden Hazard to Real Madrid in the summer of his take off and having to endure a transfer ban meant Lampard operated on a tight rope and attaining glory was a near impossible feat. Getting Chelsea into the top 4 and getting to the Emirates FA Cup final were more than satisfying for the Blues hierarchy who felt with adequate backing in the transfer window, Chelsea could go from title pretenders to contenders and from “also ran” to race winner. In the just concluded transfer window, Chelsea had a deluge of signings across all the positions; Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyec and Kai Havertz in attack, Ben Chiwell and Thiago Silva in defence and Eduoard Mendy in the goalkeeping department.

So far this season in the Premier Leagur, Chelsea have already scored 20 goals in just 8 league games making them the Premier League top scorers. The attacking trip of Werner,  Ziyech and Havertz have contributed 13 of those goals in direct goals and assists. Definitely, they have hit the ground running and seemlessly adjusted to life in the English Premier League.

In defence, Chelsea have also been sturdy and miserly as they have already kept 4 clean sheets and letting in just 10 goals. It is interesting to know that of the 10 goals conceded, other goalkeepers, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Cabalero conceded 9 with Eduoard Mendy who is fast becoming the new nulber 1 conceding just one. In their last 4 Premier League games, they have kept 3 clean sheets and this could lend credence to the fact that the acquisition of Chiwell, Silva and Mendy is delivering the dividends already.

Though it is still early days, but can we say Chelsea are looking good for a title charge? Chelsea have been pretty good against the bottom half sides like Burnley, Brighton, Sheffield and Palace but they have also stumbled against decent sides like Southampton and West Brom. Against top 6 sides, they have been poor, yet to win a match and yet to score a goal. They need to do better if they are to stand a chance of winning the title. Beating small and average teams will only give you a top 4 finish at best but to win the title, you must take points off contenders. When you beat small teams, you make an impression but when you beat big teams, you make title statement and when you do it away from home, it is bolder and louder.

The season is still a long one with many games to play and rivers to cross, can Chelsea go all the way to be crowned champions again? Time will definitely tell but the early signs are good but the signs becoming a pattern will be better for the team.
