In what appears a twist of fate and a sharp turn of events, Arsenal’s German central defender, Shkodran Mustafi has rejected the offer of a new contract from the Gunners. This is definitely a surprise from both sides. It is a surprise that after years of underwhelming performances which have been riddled with errors, the belief was that Arsenal were exploring all avenues to cash in on the much maligned defender.

This is not surprising as Arsenal already have in their ranks a mix of youth and experience. In Gabriel Maghalaes, William Saliba, Rob Holding and Pablo Mari, the Gunners have some very exciting young prospects and in David Luiz, they have the much needed experience.

With the look of things, Mustafi has definitely dropped down the pecking order and one seems to wonder why offer such player an extended contract? Is it that the club has not learnt from the contractual mistakes of Ozil and Sokratis, both players are stuck with Arsenal and heavily on the wage bill despite being conspicuously missing from the squad list of the Premier League and Europa League?

From the look of things, Mikel Arteta’s preferred centre back pairing is Gabriel and Luiz or Gabriel and Holding. Where then is Mustafi in the scheme of things, just cup competitions or in the event of injuries to those ahead of him in the pecking order?

Obviously, Mustafi has realized he is no longer a force to reckon with at Arsenal and want to search for greener pasture elsewhere, what better way to seek for pastures new without the encumbrance of a contract? As a bossman transfer, he would get loyalty bonus, huge sign on fee, negotiate  bumper contract and have the liberty to choose his next port of call. His stay at Arsenal has been full of vilifications rather than applause and as such, he deserves to find happiness wherever he can get it.

With the rejection of a new contract, Arsenal need to act fast lest they lose another player for free. The winter window is almost upon us and Arsenal should be ready to cash in, get some money, at least something is better than nothing. Get a fee for him and get him off the wage bill. The decision to offer him a new deal might not be because he is seen as a big part of the team, it could be that Arsenal want to extend his stay so they could get more in transfer fee for him since his contract would be longer. That is definitely a risk as he could refuse to leave and choose to see out his contract like compatriot, Mesut Ozil.

Arsenal deserve better, they have Gabriel to turn to, Mustafi deserves better, he should be allowed to move on, away from Arsenal.
