Joe Gomez has been ruled out for the majority of the Premier League season, as he got injured while he was on international duty with England.

This will force Liverpool to enter the January transfer window, as they seek a replacement for their center backs Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk that are already rules out for the most of the season due to injury.

The 23-year-old underwent successful surgery on last week but may not play again this season, leaving the Red’s with Joel Matip as the only senior centre-back fit and available.

The Red’s will be expecting Fabinho after the international break – he has been deputising in defense despite not been his favorite position.

Earlier this week it was suggested that the Reds might go for Bayern Munich David Alaba but was ruled out as the European champions refuse to sell the Austrian in January.

Dayot Upamecano is now reportedly Liverpool’s top target on a four-man shortlist drawn up to find a replacement for Joe Gomez.

The premiership champions were planning to wait till next summer for Upamecano, who will be available then for just £40 million.

The 22-year-old has impressed for Red Bull Leipzig and attracted interest from Manchester United and Arsenal in the summer before penning a contract extension.

A clause in his new deal allows him to leave Leipzig at the end of the season providing his release clause is met – though the Red’s may look to plug the gap before then.

Other defenders on Liverpool’s shortlist include Brighton’s Ben White and Watford Daryl Janmaat – who have only been seen as a short period solution.
