It is still early days in the season but if there is one team that has been seriously hampered by injuries, it is the defending champions, Liverpool. The Reds have had their first team decimated after a host of the players have been struck by varying degrees of injuries.
In defence, it has been a deluge of injuries for Liverpool. It started with star defender, Virgil Van Dijk who is out for the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament and in recent weeks and days, he has been joined by fellow defenders, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold.
In the midfield, it is even a worse case as the Reds have two of their defensive midfield lynchpins out; Luis Fabianho and Jordan Henderson joining long term absentees Thiago Alcantara and Oxlade Chamberlain. This has left the Reds very lightweight in midfield just as they are in defence.
In attack, there is a bit of succor for the defending champions as they have a full compliment of their forwards except Mohammed Salah who needs to go into mandatory two weeks isolation after testing positive to the dreaded Coronavirus. Manager, Jurgen Klopp has little to worry about in that regards as he still has other stars like Sadio Mane, Roberto Firminho and red hot, Diogo Jota to call on in the absence of the Anfield Pharaoh.
So much could be said of the huge injuries currently ravaging Liverpool; fatigue and the lack of summer break owing to the coronavirus which upturned the regular season calendar. It is not a coincidence that many teams have had their fair share of injuries but the big teams who have more games to play owing to their involvement in continental competitions.
For Liverpool, the road to a successful title defence is set to be a tortuous one, no thanks to the threadbare squad decimated by injuries and the litany of teams waiting to battle for their crown. This weekend, they battle in-form Leicester City. The foxes have already won at Etihad and the Emirates and would be hoping to add Anfield to another successful hunting ground. For Brendan Rodgers, it will be a homecoming but would it be a successful or hurtful one, we wait!
