With the winter transfer window less than 7 weeks away, it is not a surprise that the rumor mill is gathering steam with different transfer gossips and reports. The latest is a potential swap deal involving Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka and Inter-milan’s Christian Eriksen.
For Xhaka, it has been mixed fortunes for him since the departure of former Arsenal boss, Arsenal Wenger. He was named captain by former manager, Unai Emery only to be stripped of the band after his altercation with the fans. Determined to leave the London club in the winter window for a return back to Germany with Herta Berlin, current gaffer, Mikel Arteta stepped in to quell the disaffection, got him playing well again and of course the bridge with the fans was mended but the band never returned. The interest from Herta Berlin has since died down with the winter and summer windows coming and going.
The arrival of Thomas Partey from Athletico Madrid in the summer has thrown spanner in the works of Xhaka in the starting 11 and he seems to have lost his place to the Ghanian. The hot form of Egyptian midfielder has not helped his cause too. Going down the pecking order, from the main team to a back up role is one that would definitely not excite Xhaka.
For Eriksen, it seems a worse scenario as he has lost favor at the San Siro since his move to from White Hart Lane. Obviously, the grass is not looking greener for him in Italy. He is not a regular and the Italian giants are already considering getting him off their team. He was up for transfer even on loan during the summer window but that failed and with the winter window swinging open again shortly, he is in the market again.
Massimo Morati, former Inter owner had this to say about him,
“He is drastic, it happens to include players who are certainly talents who for whatever reason, character or time, fail to be successful. That’s what is happening to Eriksen, football is patient but up to a certain point. I think if we are to continue like this, Inter could exchange him.“
Now to the proposed swap deal between both clubs, it might just be worth it. Xhaka might be open to trying out a new league and in the Serie A, he might be able to impose himself better. The Italian league is very similar to the Bundesliga with respect to the pace of the league. Inter Milan might just represent a perfect challenge for him. For Eriksen, it cannot be reiterated enough. A return to the Premier League might just be the best option for him. He made his mark and name in the league and a return there could bring back his lost confidence. Arsenal are currently bereft of a creative midfielder after Arteta failed in his bid to sign Hossem Aouar in the summer and Mesut Ozil got frozen out of the team. Since the Spaniard craves a creative midfielder who is creative enough to pick out final passes, create chances and industrious enough to help out in defensive situations, the former Spurs man might just be the right fix.
It will be sad to watch Xhaka leave but if it is for a “better” place, let him go and if it is for a more useful player, let it happen.
