David Luiz has informed Arsenal he will leave the club at the end of the season following talks with the north London club.

The 34-year-old joined the Gunners in the summer of 2019 from Chelsea after he fell out with Frank Lampard and was deemed surplus to requirements by his former teammate.

Luiz endured a difficult first season with Arsenal and looked certain to be heading for the exit door after an error-strewn performance against Manchester City culminated in a red card.

Mikel Arteta, however, launched a staunch defence of the former Brazil international and his faith was rewarded with several colossal displays en route to a memorable FA Cup triumph.

Luiz and Arsenal subsequently opted to trigger a 12-month extension clause and the former Benfica star has arguably been his side’s most consistent central defender this team.

Arsenal still boast a wealth of options in central defence with the likes of Calum Chambers, Rob Holding, Pablo Mari and Gabriel having featured prominently this season.

William Saliba, meanwhile, is expected to be handed an opportunity to impress in pre-season having been sent out on loan to Nice in January, but Konstantinos Mavropanos has indicated he would prefer to remain at Stuttgart, rather than return to Arsenal.
