While it was looking like Africa could have three representatives for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, recent development proves that will not happen as Senegal will not take part in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, in Belgrade, Serbia.

This was due COVID-19 related disruptions.

The National Federation of Senegal informed FIBA about the challenges pertaining to COVID-19 hereby affecting their preparation in Germany. It appears that, despite consistent try from FIBA and the German Basketball Federation to support the Senegalese delegation, the team will not be able to travel to Belgrade and participate in the qualifiers.

The Senegalese national were meant to be in Group B alongside Italy and Puerto Rico, but with this news, Senegal will lose these two games by forfeit.

It should be noted that the remaining games in Belgrade are not impacted and are set to take place as planned.

Ironically, Tunisia will be participating at the Qualifying tournament, and will be up against Brazil and Croatia in, Split. If Tunisia make it through to the next round, they will join, D’Tigers of Nigeria as the two African nation that will take part at the Olympics.
