For the first time in 21 years, Lionel Messi is a free agent after his contract expires with FC Barcelona.
Four years ago, Lionel Messi extended his contract with FC Barcelona. The $674M contract deal officially lapsed at midnight in Spain, and no extension has yet been announced, fueling speculation that his 20 year run with the club could be coming to an end. While negotiations have been in motion, Messi will technically be able to negotiate elsewhere starting today.
Club President, Joan Laporta has urged fans to remain calm, wants Messi to sign a new deal as soon as possible. He has been working hard to convince Messi to renew, he wanted to sign a contract with the Argentine before the most recent one expired, but it wasn’t to be.
“We want Lionel Messi to stay and Leo wants to stay. Everything is on track – we have the issue of Financial Fair Play, we are in the process of finding the best solution for both parties” – The club president says on radio El Transistor radio
The forward is on international duty with his Argentina’s team battling for a Copa America title, when his contract expires.
The board and fans are confident Messi will sign a new deal as the relationship between Laporta and Messi’s father is very good.
Rumors of a new deal for Messi have included 2-3 more years with Barcelona, then an MLS stint with David Beckham’s Inter Miami CF, after which he’ll return in a front office or “backroom” role.
Should Messi sign a new deal with Barcelona or go elsewhere for a new challenge?
