There is one thing we cannot shy away from, the rise of Nigeria Basketball in the past couple of days. It has indeed been mind-blowing. The entire universe is talking about the exploits made by the D’Tigers of Nigeria against team USA and Argentina, in an exhibition game. Meanwhile, that’s just by the way, time to talk about the D’TIGRESS.
There is absolutely no doubts that the D’Tigress of Nigeria are having a nice time preparing for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. If you are in doubts, why not check out some of their TikTok videos. The girls are having loads of fun. With Nneka Ogwumike and Chiney Ogwumike joining up with the team in Vegas, the gang is ready to take on the WORLD.
D’Tigress of Nigeria will lock-horns with the USA in a friendly game on Sunday night. This is the sixth friendly game the team will play since preparation for Tokyo Olympics kick-started. They where 2-1 from the games played in Belgium, beating Puerto Rico and Serbia before dropping the third against Belgium. They lost their next two games, played in Spain.
Team USA, on the other hand, are ridiculously experience. They will be looking to avenge defeat on their male counterpart a week ago against the same country (Nigeria).
Expecting to play in a third Olympic Games is Tina Charles (Washington Mystics), a three-time World Cup gold medalist; while 2016 Olympic gold medalists Brittney Griner (Phoenix Mercury) and Breanna Stewart (Seattle Storm), each of whom have captured at two World Cup gold medals, return to chase a second Olympic gold in Tokyo. That sums up the quality in these team.
Team USA have played two friendly games, and they have dropped both, currently 0-2. They were beaten by WNBA ALL-STAR led by Arike Ogunbowale and Australia. Going into the third game, USA will be fired up, the team will want to avoid losing all 3 friendly games before the Olympics.
Here are some of the players in the provisional list named by coach Hurtis Hughley. Adaora Elonu, Aisha Balarabe, Amy Amukamara, Atonye Nyingifa, Ezinne Kalu, Pallas Kunayi-Akpanah, Ifunaya Ibekwe, Amy Okonkwo, Victoria Macauley, Oderah Chisom, Elizabeth Williams, Nneka Ogwumike, Chiney Ogwumike and Erica Ogwumike.
Like they say, “what a man can do, a woman can do better”. This is not putting pressure on the D’Tigress, this is telling them who they are and how they can further make history for themselves.
The mood in the Nigeria camp has been lively right from the get-go. With the looks of things right now, USA won’t be sleeping on this. It probably looks like an exhibition game, but it’s going to be competitive, the Americans have a statement to make.
The game will be played in Vegas at exactly 10:30 pm Nigerian time.
