A’JA Wilson dropped a double double 16 points 10 rebounds as USA women’s basketball team comprehensively dispatched the D’Tigress of Nigeria 93-62 in the final exhibition game before jetting off to Tokyo for the Olympics.
Atonye Nyigifa added 9 points for Nigeria, closely followed by Ifunaya Ibekwe with 8 points shooting 50% from beyond the arc (2-4 3pts).
Making her debut for the national team was Erica Ogwumike whose first points for the National team from the free throw line pulled a smile from her sister Chiney Ogwumike. Erica scored 5 points in the end.
The only saving grace for the D’Tigress is that this won’t count, as they will have to improve on last night display, when the lock horns with USA again on the 27th of July this time at the Olympics.
The Yankee ladies proved D’Tigress are no match with impressive offensive and defensive display from start to finish. They shot 53.8% from the field (35-65 FGs).
Breanna Stewart and Brittney Griney combined for 26 points for team USA, who had 5 players with double figures.
Speaking after the game A’JA Wilson had these to say.
“we had to come out and understand everyone will give their best game, that’s why we have to come out at a high level”.
The first quarter saw the USA jump out to a 29-15 lead. The USA shot 50.0% from the field (10-20 FGs) and 80.0% from 3-point (4-5 3pt FGs) and had a 14-4 rebounding advantage.
The USA upped its percentage from the field to 59.5% at halftime, shooting 12-of-17 in the second period to help outscore Nigeria 26-19, and at the midway point, the USA led 55-34.
The USA improved its advantage by just one point in the third quarter, scoring 18 points to Nigeria’s 17, and by the end of the third quarter, four U.S. players had scored in double digits.
The USA gave up just 11 points in the fourth quarter, scoring 20 points to bring the game to its 93-62 final.
This is the sixth friendly game the Nigerian team will play since preparation for Tokyo Olympics kick-started. They where 2-1 from the games played in Belgium, beating Puerto Rico and Serbia before dropping the third against Belgium. They lost their next two games, played in Spain.
Nigeria are grouped alongside USA, France and host nation Japan.
