An Everton star has found himself in police custody over the weekend, according to reports from The Sun and The Mirror that emerged last night
The 31-year-old is alleged to have been arrested on suspicion of “child sex offences”, but remains unnamed.
Greater Manchester Police said that:
“Officers arrested a 31-year-old man on Friday 16 July 2021 on suspicion of child sex offences.
“He is on police bail pending further enquiries.”
According to both outlets, the player returned home on Friday after having been released on bail.
On Monday evening, Everton put out a statement on their club website, reading:
“Everton can confirm it has suspended a First-Team player pending a police investigation. The Club will continue to support the authorities with their inquiries and will not be making any further statement at this time”
Little is known about the player, aside from his age and the revelation that he is “also a regular for his country”, but those two facts alone rule out most of the squad.
It remains to be seen how this case will progress from here, with serious allegations made against the player so far, albeit currently unproven.
The Premier League was shocked when, in 2016, Adam Johnson was jailed for six years for “engaging in sexual activity with a besotted 15-year-old fan”, although he was set free three years into his sentence.
With the Premier League season just around the corner, however, this could have severe knock-on effects for Everton and their pre-season plans.
