Italian Men’s Basketball team survived a dramatic fightback to beat Germany 92-82, in the opening Group B game of the Basketball event of Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Simone Fontecchio led the Italians with 20 points, closely followed by Atlanta Hawks guard Danilo Gallinari and Stefano Tonut with 18 points a-piece. The Germans led for most part of the game, but saw their 10 points led cut down to 2 in the fourth quarter. Two successive 3’s from Italy put the game at 86-82 late in the 4th, at that point the Germans where rattled. Italy added 6 more points to leave the scoreline at 92-82.

Germany without Maxi Kleber and Dennis Schroeder where terrible from the defence, with Italy’s quick ball movement causing loads of problems for them. Maodo Lo registered 24 points for Germany who shot 47% 15/32 from the 3-point line to Italy’s 48%, 15/31.

Next up is Nigeria up against Australia at exactly 9:20 Nigerian time.
