Brazilian center half Marcao was sent off in Galatasaray’s first game of the season on Monday evening for head-butting and punching his own teammate Kerem Akturkoglu.
Akturkoglu shut Marcao up when Galatasaray scored their second goal of the game and it infuriated the Brazilian footballer who reacted by walking aggressively towards his fellow teammate with him head-butting and throwing several punches before the rest of the Galatasaray squad were able to separate the duo.
The Video Assistant Referee called the attention of the match official to the incident and after consultations, Marcao was sent off for his actions while Akturkoglu remained on the pitch as he did not react aggressively towards his teammate.
Marcao is a popular figure in Galas dressing room and is one of the most influential players but his act is now leading to a potential exit from the Instabul based side.
Despite being one man short, Galatasaray still won the game 2 nill courtesy of goals from Mbaye Diagne and Alexandru Cicaldau.
Fatih Terim who’s the gaffer of the Turkish giants was quizzed about the incident after the game and said
“I say it for all of us, for the football world. We have all kinds of arguments in the locker room, on the field.
“From time to time, we come to the point of attacking each other, but I was the first to say such a thing to a teammate on the field. I see it many times. I don’t understand what’s going on yet…
“Kerem is young and our precious. We do not allow anyone to do anything to anyone. Such actions can happen in football.
“These happen at practice in the locker room, but are quickly resolved. However, this was not pleasant. The solution is ours. We’ll figure it out somehow.”
