The University of Ilorin Football League pride itself has been the Nigeria’s foremost, competitive, exciting, and organised University Football League.

The League which was birthed in 2016 has produced Unilorites who have gone on to become professional footballers with their career paths in Europe and the Nigerian scene.

The League currently in its fifth season following its inception dated five years ago as recorded over 873 matches with 1,500 goals.

UIL Football League is a standard round robin league which started with 10 teams in 2016 but has now gone on to register 12 teams. Pioneer club City Boys FC won the maiden edition with Marine FC and H-High FC also wining the coveted trophy in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons respectively.

In the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak, which disrupted the status-quo in virtually all sectors globally, the UIL Football League was not excluded from the damages of the pandemic as all footballing activities during the 2019/20 campaign were put on hold in consequence of the closure of educational institutions by the Federal Government.

However, upon the resumption of university activities in 2021, the League an became abridged one where teams were grouped into two pacts.

City Boys proved to be too good for their counterparts as they lifted the trophy for a record 2nd time.

With the commencement of the 2020/2021 season this Friday, 27 August, the league will have a total of 12 teams in both groups as the abridged format will be retained once more.

Teams registered for the season are defending champions City Boys, Emirates United FC, one time winners H-High FC and Marine FC, Blazing Stars FC, Skillz FC, Big spenders FC Zeus, Real Eagles FC, JAD FC, ATEC, Leeds FC and All Stars FC.

The League Chairman spoke with our correspondence, with him assuring the students populace that this edition promises to be intriguing.

“We’ve weighed our options as a board and we’ve come to realize that the format we’re retaining is the best for us and we promise that it’d be the best that has ever happened in the history of Unilorin. You can see that the league boast of players representing the institution at the HIFL which is also showcasing that talents abound in the UIL Football League,” League Board Committee Chairman, Afolayan Toyosi told Ojbsport.

The top two teams in each group qualify for the playoffs slated later this year with cash prizes and pride to play for.

The title sponsor for the Football League are Sports Continent, Ojbsport, Optimix Prints, Toyes Tech and Unilorin Students Union.
