Lionel Messi made his much anticipated Ligue 1 debut on Sunday for PSG, in front of a delirious crowd at the Stade Delaune on Sunday.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner, who signed a two-year deal earlier this month after leaving his boyhood club Barcelona, was applauded by many of the 21,000 fans in attendance while warming up.
The 34-year-old received a wonderful reception from fans inside the Stade Auguste-Delaun as he was introduced in the 65th minute of the game. He replaced his former teammates Neymar.
The Argentinian was unable to make the squad for recent fixtures against Strasbourg and Brest, and therefore sat in the stands with his fellow teammates. But fans finally got a glimpse of Messi tonight.
PSG took the lead in the 16th minute through the World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe’s header, in what could be his final game in a PSG shirt.
Reacting to Mbappé’s future with PSG, team captain Marquinhos said “We are not even asking him if he will stay or not. He has his goals. We want him to stay. He showed how important he is to us. If he stays he’ll help us a lot. It is up to him and to the leaders to find a solution.”
Zimbabwean midfielder Marshall Munetsi found the back of the net in the 51st minute with a tap-in but the goal was disallowed for offside after a lengthy VAR review.
Mbappe later settled the game in the 63rd minute by scoring an excellent second goal just after the hour mark, converting a neat low cross from Achraf Hakimi.
The win now takes PSG to the top of the league. Twelve points from four games.
