The Silverbacks of Uganda defeated 2015 Afrobasket Champions, D’Tigers of Nigeria 80-68 to seal a quarter finals spot at ongoing Afrobasket Championship in Kigali, Rwanda.

Uzodinma Utomi scored a game-high 23 points, while Jeremiah Mordi and Ikenna Ndugba both added 12 and 10 points respectively for Nigeria who have been eliminated from the championship.

Nigeria began the 4th quarter with two unanswered 3-pointers from George Domingo forcing Uganda’s head coach George Galanopoulos to call a time out. On return, D’Tigers extended the run to 8-0 but a couple of 3s from Robinson Opong settled some nerves and the East Africans were back on track to victory.

Robinson Opong who represented Rivers Hoopers of Nigeria at inaugural Basketball Africa League, lead the the Silverbacks with 19 points shooting 6/10 (60%) from beyond the arc.

Toronto Raptors man Ishmael Wainwright delivered another masterclass performance with a triple-double of 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists, while Geu Deng also added 11 points.

Uganda will face Cape Verde in the Quarter Finals on Thursday.

Nigeria miss out on the quarter finals spot for the first since the last two edition (2015 and 2017).

D’Tigers will now focus on 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers, after getting to know their foes for the championship on Tuesday afternoon.
