D’Tigress of Nigeria will today (Monday) face Angola in the last group game of the ongoing 2021 Afrobasket Championship in Yaounde, Cameroon. After securing a win against Mozambique in the first game, Nigeria can finish the on top of the group should they beat Angola today. A victory will as well save them the stress of going through the qualification round to seal a quarter final spot.
The task for Nigerian women’s basketball team is beyond winning the first game or making it out of the group stage, as hot favorites, the task is to defend the Afrobasket championship they won in 2017 and 2019. It’s definitely not going to be easy for them.
Nigeria is clearly the team to beat in this tournament. The last time the No.1 team in Africa lost a game on the continent of Africa was during a nail-biting Women’s AfroBasket SemI-Final against Cameroon on October 2, 2015. Since then, D’Tigress have accrued to a 18-0 winning streak in Africa.
A hardfought victory in the first game over Mozambique is the best possible way to kick-start the Championship, going forward they will need to step up. Nigerians will hope for another incredible display from one of the best point gaurd in the continent, Ezinne Kalu, alongside other players to beat Angola in the second and last group game. It will be recalled that the latter struggled to beat Mozambique 61-70 in their own fixture played on Sunday.
The game against Angola will be played at 8 pm Nigerian time.
