Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is disappointed that the situation with teammate Ben Simmons has deteriorated, he said during NBA media day on Monday.
This comes following the news that multiple 76ers wanted to travel to Los Angeles this week to meet with Simmons and spend time convincing their All-Star teammate to commit to the 2021-22 season with them. However, they were informed not to come and that Simmons did not want to meet, sources told The Athletic on Saturday.
“I really hope he changes his mind,” Embiid told reporters on Monday. “I do love playing with him because he adds so much to our team. We’ve been building this team around us. I don’t see it as ‘This is my team’. I don’t care about any of that.”
The core leaders on the 76ers — such as Embiid, Tobias Harris and Matisse Thybulle — and most of the team were set to take a jet to see Simmons before being turned away, sources said. Multiple sources said Simmons didn’t want his teammates, some of whom he considers friends, to make the Philadelphia-to-Los Angeles commute out of courtesy because he won’t change his mind on wanting a trade.
