Real Madrid Women’s head coach David Aznar has admitted that playing in this season’s Uefa Women’s Champions League is a challenge for the Spanish capital side, Real Madrid.

The club is one of the three newcomers to the European competition this season’s. They opened their European account with a 0-1 win away from home, courtesy a Lorena Navarro strike in the 33rd minute, against the Ukrainian side, WFC Zhytlobud-1 Kharkiv last week.

Addressing the media ahead of their home game against Breidablik on Wednesday, David Aznar said : “We’re competing alongside the top 16 teams in Europe and every one of them has the right to be here.”

“We’re aware of the hard work we put in to get to this stage and we’re excited. We want to compete with the 16 top teams in Europe during this group stage. It’s a new competition for us and we know that we’ve got some major absentees, but we’ve got a competitive squad. We head into this game feeling confident about coming up against our opponents”.

“We’ve had a lot of games in quick succession. The players who represent this crest deserve praise for the effort that they’re putting in. They go into every game with the highest level of demands. There are no excuses when you wear this shirt. We’re really excited to achieve a good result in our first Champions League game.”

Real Madrid eliminated one of the best teams in the world, Manchester City across two legs to qualify for the group stage of the tournament.
