The Oyo State camp at the National Youth Games has been filled with all smiles and laughter as promises made were been redeemed for medalists.
Prior to the games, the Chairman, Oyo State Sports Council, Honorable Gbenga ‘Arole’ Adewusi had promised the athletes monenatry rewards for each medal won.
Five thousand naira for gold, three thousand naira for silver and two thousand and five hundred naira for bronze.
Gabriel Urie was the first recipient of the reward after winning bronze in gymnastics on the very first day of the competition. Since then, Oyo has raked in 30 medals with each medalist receiving their reward.
According to Honorable Gbenga Adewusi, “the reward is a source of motivation for the athletes, it does gear them up to perform well.
“This is different from whatever reward the state government will give to them”, he concluded.
Team Oyo presently has six gold medals, seven silver and seventeen bronze medals after day 5 of the U-15 event.
