Rangers’ Nigerian contingent may be eligible to face Celtic, according to Nigerian coach Gernot Rohr.

Steven Gerrard has been unsure if Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey, and Leon Balogun would be available for their SPFL Old Firm Derby in January.

By that time, the Super Eagles will have begun their preparations for the African Cup of Nations, and FIFA has set a deadline of December 28 for players to join their various teams ahead of the competition.

However, Rohr revealed that he has already received phone calls from Glasgow in anticipation of the Old Firm match.

He acknowledged that the scheduling of games in the UK differs from those of other countries, which have a longer winter break and players who can travel easily.

While he wants to train as much as possible for the AFCON, he admitted that not everyone in his squad would be ready by FIFA’s deadline.

“We need a good preparation, we need the players at least ten days before but like you know in the UK, they play,” he said.

“Somebody called me from Glasgow already. They have the derby Rangers v Celtic on the second day of January and asked if we can let the players play.

“We have a lot of problems to prepare the team, but I think we will have most of our players at least ten days before.”
