Portugal and Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo, has taken to Instagram to motivate his teammates after the shocking 1-2 loss to Serbia at the Estádio da Luz stadium in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Portugal entered the final group match in first place in Group A, and a win or draw would have been enough for them to book a ticket to Qatar 2022. Instead, the lost on a late goal, finishing second and settling for a spot in the playoffs.

“Football has shown us time and again that sometimes it’s the winding roads that lead us to the most desired wrecks.”

“Yesterday’s result was tough, but not enough to bring us down. The goal of attending the World Cup 2022 is still very much alive and we know what we have to do to get there. No excuses. Portugal bound for Qatar.”

Portugal will now have to go through the play-offs if they are to join Serbia and the likes Germany, Denmark, Brazil, Belgium, France, Croatia, Spain that have already qualified as at the time this article was written in Qatar

How the Europe World Cup playoffs works

Twelve European nations, will be split into three brackets of four teams each. The 10 second-place group finishers and two teams from the UEFA Nations League standings. The three brackets will each have a single World Cup ticket on the line.

The four teams in each of the three brackets will first play a single elimination semifinal on the 24th and 25th of March 2022, followed by a single-elimination playoff final on the 28th and 29th of same month. Only the winner of the final will make it to Qatar.
