Barcelona and French forward Ousmane Dembele is asking for an improved contract according to his agent, Mousa Sissoko.

The 24-year-old joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, for an initial €105m (£97m), plus a potential €42m (£38m) in add-ons, making the then 20-year-old the second most expensive player in history behind Paris Saint Germain star Neymar.

He was bought to replace Neymar, after he moved to PSG for a world record fee of £199 million. So far, he has been a disappointment. Managing 30 goals and 22 assists in 121 matches played.

According to data from, Ousmane Dembele’s injury issues have been constant in Spain. He has suffered 13 injuries since joining Barcelona in the summer of 2017.

Seven of those injuries are related to his hamstrings. He has already missed a total of 134 days through injury this season.

The most games Dembele has missed through an injury is the 20 games he missed between September and January in his opening season.

With Barcelona’s financial woe, the chances of improving his contract isn’t likely. Newcastle are closely monitoring his situation. It was reported they offered him an improved salary, better than his current salary.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the club want a decision within 14 days over whether Dembele wants to accept the offer presented to him.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta issued an update on the situation on Thursday saying;

“Dembélé’s renewal is going slower than we wanted. But we’re still working on it – we want Ousmane to stay, he could be a key player if we’ll reach an agreement”.

The Paris born and former Rennes forward has six months left on his contract, speculation continues to swirl around his future, much of it contradictory.

The big question is – do you think Ousmane Dembele deserves an improved contract in Barcelona, or should the Catalonia club side let him go?
