Super Eagles and Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi, on Friday equalled his best ever tally in all competition in a season.

The Nigerian scored his ninth Bundesliga goal of the season, to put Union Berlin ahead against RB Leipzig in the sixth minute. Julian Ryerson’s lofted cross found the head of Timo Baumgartl, who guided the ball into the path of Awoniyi and he reacted fast to poke in from close range.

Seven minutes later, Christopher Nkunku’s long-range effort evaded Union Berlin’s goalkeeper grasp to bring the visitors back to level.

The second half didn’t have the ferocious start of the first, but the home team started better than their visitors. Union Berlin restored their lead in the 57th minute through Timo Baumgartl from a well worked corner kick.

Awoniyi now has 14 goals in 23 appearances in all competition this season.

His best ever tally in Europe was in the 2018/2019 season when he scored 14 goals in 38 appearances while on loan at KAA Gent of Belgium. He scored seven league goals in 25 appearances, one in four Europa League qualifiers, two goals in the Belgian Cup and four other goals in the JPL Playoff II.

The win tonight puts Union Berlin in a Champions League spot. They host Slavia Prague next week in an Europa Conference League game at home. Fisher’s men need to get the maximum three points to qualify for the next phase of the tournament, while a draw for Slavia will see them qualify for the next phase.
